Second place after an exciting run-up. Legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston comes on third place.
Point à Pitre – Milan, 2014 November 22th
Second place but most of all first of monohulls in “Rhum” Class: Andrea Mura just crossed the finish line at Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe 2014. He run the distance from Saint-Malo (departed on last November 2nd) in 20 days/2 hrs/19 mins/36 sec.
Another success for Sardinian ocean racer, competing on “Vento di Sardegna” with the 4 Moors on prow to promote Sardinia Region worldwide.
It was a complex Route du Rhum for Andrea Mura. A battled race, full of traps and “death zones”. So this is sailing: no way to make calculations when weather is unstable and wind does not support.
Wind that seemed to be favorable to Sardinian sailor, who kept first place during storms between the Channel and Northern Atlantic but has been trapped within Azores Anticylone, passed undamaged by fast flleets of Ultime and IMOCA classes and able to capture Vento di Sardegna slowing down for 2 days his ride to Point à Pitre, in French Antilles.
Behind him, a trimaran, ANEO, lightly leaded by Anne Caseneuve, clever in taking advantage of Mura’s empasse to get the first place to never leave it.
A race marked by a beautiful run-up: Mura, slipped to fifth place, bravely and inexorably climbed positions up to final second place. Fighting and planning, sacrificing hours of sleep and looking for the best set ups to be back on track.
We have to mention the sports battle with Wilfrid Clerton on “Cap Au Cap Location”, fourth at finish line, but most of all the “challenge” with legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston on “Grey Power”, 75 years of experience and passion, devoted to an extreme sport such as ocean racing.
“It was a very tiring and uncertain Route du Rhum, harder than 2010 edition – Mura says – after the storms in the first part of the regatta and the quiet Azores Anticylone dead calm, in the final stage it has been a very exciting challenge and also an honor to battle with Sir Robin and – despite some small breakdowns – cross the finish line as first of monohulls”.
Impressive track record for Vento di Sardegna, fast Open 50 designed by Felci and already protagonist with 4 wins and 1 second place in the latest 5 official appearances (Route du Rhum 2010, Twostar 2012, Quebec-S. Malò 2012, Ostar 2013,Route du Rhum 2014). Head and heart now to the new project, the IMOCA 60 with whom Mura will attempt the assault on 2016 Vendèe Globe.
