The social network giant announces that it is now possible send also SMS on Messenger. Yes, you have understood correctly, the biggest global social media network integrates the old text message into its platform.
Hence, it will now be possible to define -in Messenger settings- whether to send an SMS or “to chat” with the receiver.
Its seems strange that Facebook has embraced the idea of the “old” messaging, but David Marcus, VP Messaging Product of FB, explains the importance of this integration as follows: “Until now it was possible to chat with the friends and family members who have installed the app on their mobile phones, but in order to receive the communication, there are some requirements such as having internet access and/or a smart phone”.
SMS, instead, can reach to everyone and anyone. It doesn’t matter if the recipient has a smartphone or not, and more importantly, SMS is delivered also when internet is not available, also abroad.
Born with the first mobile flip, nowadays SMS has been replaced with more powerful channels. We have “switched” from using our phones only for calls and texts to having a small computer in our pockets, which also allows us to work.
But – as Ubiquity notes in its Mobile Finance Report – SMS is still strong in the world of communications and it is a central instrument in lots of scenes and frameworks.
Relaunched by Facebook, SMS came to live a new life…
